Analysis & Research

Groundwork is best known for practical projects, but has also carried a number of successful research projects and feasibility studies using GIS. As well as our extensive national and regional databases, one of Groundwork's key advantages in this area is its access to real projects and local groups along with its network of partners. Recent projects include:

London Strategic Development Mapping

Over the past 12 months, a partnership between the Diocese of London, Diocese of Southwark, United Reformed Church, London Diocesan Housing Association, CUF and Groundwork has been working to map the major areas of regeneration across the capital. This has involved bringing together data created by national, regional and local bodies to create a map covering the whole capital.

There have been 2 key outputs from this piece of work:

  • An interactive mapping tool has been installed for use by the partners
  • A table based tool has been created allowing the regeneration needs in each parish to be assesed

Virtual Environmental Planning Systems (VEPS)

VEPs is an alternative approach to planning consultation, allowing people to view and make comments on planning developments in three-dimensions (3D) within the context of an existing landscape or cityscape. The aim of the project was to develop and test tools for use over the web. The partnership was led by the Environment Agency and involved several Universities and Agencies across North West Europe.

Groundwork's role was to test some of the concepts and tools in a realistic setting with comunity groups and feed into the process of developing the tools.
