Memories & Recollections - interview with Alan Godwin

Alan Godwin worked at HMS Daedalus as a carpenter. On the 21st May 2008 Imran Bannister, a Daedalus Community Consultant, interviewed Mr. Godwin about his experiences on site. An extract of this interview can be found below

Bank note

“1958 they had an air day there at HMS Daedalus and I was a carpenter. I did a lot of work in HMS Daedalus. They had an opening day and I went to the opening day and on the gate, I think they charged a small fee so you could look around, and with it what they give you was what I’m showing you now [Daedalus one pound note].

“I’ve had it all this time and I treasure it. I went in 1958 when I lived in Titchfield. And I was a carpenter. I did my apprenticeship in Gosport and as I say I went and that’s what they gave us. When we went we had to pay a small fee for the opening day. I like to keep things; it’s going to be handed down to my son.

“I don't think they made them at any other time, I think this was just a one off”

"I worked in Daedalus as well. I had a motorbike at the time and you had to dismount of your motorbike and push it through! Wasn’t allowed to ride apparently. You had to push it through the gate. That was their rules and they wouldn’t let you, you know, you had to dismount your motorbike and push it through. When you’re on the other side of the line, then you get on your motorbike. But you have to have a permit to get in. And you had to get a permit off who you were working for.”

I really enjoyed the air day. I have very happy memories of everything”
