Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are increasingly used in all areas of life. Popular uses include Google Earth, in-car navigation and 'find your nearest' locators. However, GIS is also used as a serious business and research tool. GIS is widely used by larger companies and public agencies, either for managing assets or planning services.
GIS can benefit smaller organisations by giving real insights into their work and allowing them to understand the context that they operate in. Groundwork is able to build on its community based approach and offer a 'human side' to GIS. About Groundwork
Groundwork is a federation of local Trusts, supported by a Regional and National structure. We are interested in colaborations, partnerships or contracts at any of these levels.
Our aim is 'building sustainable communities in areas of need through joint environmental action'.
We are able to bring our community development approach and our environmental knowledge to GIS projects, in addition to our technical GIS skills. GIS plays an important role in:
- Helping us to understand areas
- Allowing us to combine information from partner organisations & local people
- Carry out analysis and research
- Monitoring change over time and evaluating projects
As well as delivering straightforward GIS contracts, we are also working to find innovative ways of using GIS in both community participation and strategic planning.
