Overview:
London is constantly changing with several of the country's largest development and regeneration projects taking place in the capital. The Diocese of London is engaged in community projects across the capital ranging from mothers & toddlers groups to £36m developments and the cumulative financial input is estimated £1B per year. Many of the community projects are developed at grass roots level and while this is often their strength - it has lacked the additional strength of the additional resources brought to it through a strategic approach.
Over the past 12 months, the Diocese of London and Groundwork have been working to map the major areas of regeneration across the capital. This has involved bringing together data created by national, regional and local bodies to create a map covering the whole capital. This is now being used to inform the strategic development priorities and investments for the Diocese of London.
Challenges:
- Although much of the information needed was nominally in the public domain, it was dispersed across over 40 organisations
- Non-standard boundaries - The church's parish boundaries do not coincide with census areas, wards, etc
- The sensitivity & commercial nature of development which required making judgements about the difference between proposals and actual developments
Deliverables:
There have been 3 main deliverables:
- Interactive maps for use by diocesan staff, which allow different combinations of information to be brought together and also interrogated.
- Prioritised tables based on weightings of different factors
- A simplified version of the map that has been made available on the internet to encourage those living and working in London to understand the scale of the change in their areas.
A partnership has also been established to keep the data up to date and exploit its potential uses.
