Strategic Maps

Groundwork has developed particular expertise in using GIS to draw together data from a wide variety of sources and apply it across a particular region, or across the country. This has included mapping environmental, economic and social data for both urban and rural areas. These type of maps can be very effective in presenting large and complex datasets in an understandable way. The maps also allow patterns and clusters to be identified and can be built up to form a decision making or prioritising tool.

Recent successful projects include:

  • Mapping the major regeneration areas across London for a partnership of church groups led by the Church of England
  • Mapping supply and demand for different types of accommodation for Tourism South East
  • Helping a partnership of National Parks and AONBs in the South West identify the size and population of their catchment areas

Specific services have included:

  • Taking lists and tables and turning them into maps of facilities for use in reports and presentations
  • Creating interactive maps that allow users to combine and interrogate information from their desktop
  • Producing prioritised lists that reorder themselves when weightings of the different factors are changed
  • Creating project websites that contain descriptions and photos as well as maps and which allow the public to view data, answer questions and comment on the maps
